History of the Temple
The sacred tradition of Kolluru is closely connected with Sage Kola, from whom the place is believed to have derived its name. According to temple tradition and regional legend, Sage Kola performed penance in this area and worshipped the divine. The temple's mythology is also associated with the demon Mookasura. It is believed that the Divine Mother defeated Mookasura and came to be worshipped here as Mookambika. The shrine subsequently became an important centre of Shakti worship. Adi Shankaracharya is traditionally believed to have visited Kolluru, meditated in this sacred region and consecrated the image of Goddess Mookambika. The temple has since remained an important pilgrimage destination, particularly for devotees from Karnataka, Kerala and other parts of South India.
