Sri Bhuvaneshwari Temple (Siddapur)

Sri Bhuvaneshwari Temple at Bhuvanagiri, near Kumta in Siddapur taluk, Karnataka is a significant historic temple dedicated to Goddess Bhuvaneshwari Devi, who also known as Kannada Maate (mother of Kannada). The temple is unique in Karnataka as it is the only temple solely dedicated to Goddess Bhuvaneshwari in the State. It is approximately three centuries old, constructed by Basavendra, the last ruler of the Bilagi dynasty, around the year 1692. The temple construction reflects Bilagi kingdom’s admiration and promotion of Kannada culture. The temple remains under the administration of the Havyak community residing locally. The temple is set on top of a hill about 300 feet tall, requiring the ascent of about 350 steps to reach it. It is a place of continuous worship throughout the year, with regular rituals, Abhishek and chanting of mantras. The temple location is picturesque, surrounded by lush greenery of the Western Ghats. Access to the temple is from Siddapur-Kumta road, and it is about 8 km from Siddapur town. The temple is close to other tourist spots like Jog Falls, making it a potential site for cultural and nature tourism. Annual festivals like the Teppotsava (float festival) are celebrated.
